Issues Facing The Technology Industry - Elroy's Future
Much like most industries, there are many different challenges that they must deal with at any given time. For the tech industry, I feel that the potential for another bubble burst is one of the major challenges facing everyone in the tech industry. With a partner actively involved in venture capital investing, I frequently hear about insane valuations for companies that are out there disrupting industries to build market share as opposed to focusing on earnings. This of course begs the question, is the venture capital world evolving to accommodate the changing reality of the technology industry or is the next bubble just waiting to burst.
There are loads of opinions and speculation out there on what the Next Big One will look like. Some say that this could be much worse than the dotcom bubble and others say it would be a slower decline, more of an adjustment. For me, the important questions that I feel we all need to consider are: What does a tech bubble or adjustment mean for the people working in the tech industry, specifically software developers? Who will be impacted the most and is there anything that we can do to protect ourselves? When will the bubble burst and will it look like the last time? I definitely don’t have the answers to all or any of those questions and aside from a lot of speculation no one else does either.
As a child, I loved watching the Jetsons and imagining how cool it would be to live in a world surrounded by amazing and cool technology. A lot has changed since I was sitting there eating breakfast at the coffee table watching the Jetsons and most of the change has involved technology. It turns out that Hanna-Barbera wasn’t all that far off, as we already live in a world where technology is intertwined in most if not all aspects of our life.
While I don’t think there is anyone that can truly predict what the next tech bubble or adjustment will look like, I don’t think anyone would dispute that technology will play a big role in whatever the future brings. Understanding that there may be bumps along the way, I am excited to be a part of the technology industry and I can’t wait for the day that I get my very own Rosie. Especially since this Blog is really cutting into my chores time. For me, I take a great deal of comfort in the reality that there is an inevitable growth in the technology industry. Along with the inevitable growth, there will undoubtedly be drastic drops in the industry, as long as it doesn’t end up like my second favorite cartoon, there will be a place for all of us in the technology industry of the future.
